Kid Cudi on Flunkmaster Flex
Flex seems like he has no idea what the internet is lol He seems suprised at how Cudi gained his success and how it all developed. Hit the break for some of the transcript and part 2 of the interview.
Flex: The whole internet rapper thing, or getting exposure to through internet, is very hard for me to understand.
Cudi: I know how to air out mixtapes, how it use to be back in the day to get your music out there. The DJ Clues, the Funk Flexs, the guys to reach out for your music. But I was experimenting a lot with my music to the point it didn’t fit the realm of what was going on right then and there.
…
Flex: I saw a cover, it was the XXL cover. It was you and who else?
Cudi: It was me, Wale, B.o.B., Asher Roth, Curren$y, Ace Hood, Blu, Cory Gunz, Mickey Factz.
Flex: So when I saw the cover, I was in my office with my staff and I said “who the hell are these people and what is this about?”
Cudi: Because we don’t look like..
Flex: Yeah Asher Roth’s a little different, but I didn’t know where you guys were from. And I didn’t even ask, I’m gonna keep it 100. I didn’t ask who these rappers were and I didn’t care. But then I dug a little deeper and tried to understand how this myspace thing works. So you put your song on your myspace, is this is the Day N Nite record that we hear now today.
Cudi: Yeah, I put that on myspace for the first time March 2007.
Flex: 2007??? It’s 09! So you didn’t have a deal then.
Cudi: Actually I just got my deal like two months ago.
Flex: While this record was playing, you didn’t have a deal?
Cudi: Yeah we made it on Billboard without a deal.
Flex: Keep it 100, do you find certain rappers/DJs feel a certain way about you because of how you came in the game?
Cudi: Nah, a lot of DJs been embracing me. I ran into Jadakiss, Bun B it was all love.
…
Flex: I guess I have to learn to grow a certain respect for artists from the internet. I’m learning today. I guess it’s scary for me being a DJ and a fan of the music being in a nightclub and not knowing where it came from and everybody else does. I’m learning to embrace the movement. New York, New Jersey, Connecticut: I put this show together Sunday at BB Kings with Cudi, Busta, Fat Joe. I was in my office going through names and the people in my office are like I should reach out to Kid Cudi, and I’m like ‘For What? WHY?’. So I get his number and I was so surprised it was a number that really rang to your phone for a dude with a hot record. I had a different line up for the show that I will take to my grave… So he picks up and it made me a different respect for him when I gave him the lineup and he was like “ehhh”. I was like ‘Oh Shoot’ he ain’t feeling everybody on the bill. I gotta keep it real NY, I respected that so much. I’m so used to music industry phoniness and people who yes me to death. So I gotta be honest, I changed the bill cuz I wanted Kid Cudi on the show.
