Earlier this week we shared with you the 30 biggest moments of Kid Cudi’s career but this time we’re doing it a bit different. These are my personal 8 favorite Kid Cudi moments of the past 5 years. Some big moments, some small, but either way they all have stuck with me over the past 5 years from first hand experience.
Cudderisback Song & Music Video
With his debut album under his belt and the holidays around the corner Cudi decided to treat the fans to some brand new music by belssing my inbox with this song in early December of 2009. Freestyling over the Vampire Weekend track “Ottomon Couch” Cudi raps his way through one of my favorite songs to date. If that wasn’t enough, he linked up with Jason Goldwatch / Decon for to release the official music video which was filmed on tour in Boston.
“Hello and Happy Holidays to everyone of my fans, hope u guys arnt ragin too much. SIKE! : ) peace and love from your bud, Cud”
Kid Cudi x Semtex Interview 2009
The excitement for Kid Cudi’s debut album was through the roof in early September and this DJ Semtex interview is one I will never forget. Kid Cudi would go on the show and premiere three new songs from “Man on the Moon: The End of Day” including Pursuit of Happiness, Sky Might Fall and Enter Galactic. This was a rare moment as it would go on to be the only time Cudi would ever hop on the radio to premiere a new song from any of his albums. On top of that, Semtex would show mad love for the site while this little exchange went down towards the end.
Live Performances of "Deep Sleep" (Unreleased)
I could have went with any of these songs on this list of unreleased music we wish Kid cudi would release but this one is my personal favorite hands down. Cudi teased this across his tour in late 2009 as the follow up “Part 2″ to “Enter Galactic (Love Connection Part I)” from his debut album “Man on the Moon: The End of Day”. Other than a handful of performances of the song live that month this song was never heard from again.
"Dose of Dopeness " Released
Almost 4 years would pass before this would happen but it finally did early last year thanks to constant demand from die hard fans for the release of “Dose of Dopeness”. With WZRD due out in just a few weeks, Kid Cudi and Dot Da Genius let go one of their earliest recorded songs for free! The hype for “Dose of Dopeness” all started back in 2008 with a performance in Clevelandand it’s safe to say it lived up to the hype as “the holy grail of Kid Cudi songs”.
First Grammy Nominations
It took over 2 years for the world to fully appreciate the brilliance that is “Day ‘n” Nite”, culminating with the song receiving two Grammy nominations in December of 2009. “Day ‘n’ Nite” was nominated for “Best Rap Solo Performance” and “Best Rap Song” and finally Cudi also got the nod for “Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group” for ‘”Make Her Say” featuring Common and Kanye West. He would ultimately go on to lose in all three categories and win his first Grammy in 2012 but none the less seeing Cudi getting his first nomination and celebrate being in the Grammy family was a great sight to see.
Performance in SoHo For MOTM II Release
Hundreds of die hard Cudi fans lined up the streets of SoHo in NYC on the release date of his sophomore album as they tried to get their hands on the limited edition BAPE x Mr. Rager Tee. After a few hours passed during the shirts release at BAPE, Cudi made his appearance as he hopped on the back of a pick-up truck completely shutting down Greene Street as he performed a few songs from “The Legend of Mr. Rager”.
"Goodbye World" Film World Premiere
Cudi was no stranger to acting by this point with “How to Make It In America” under his belt along with “Need For Speed” and “Two Night Stand” on the way but it was this indie comedy that was his first to hit the big screen. On June 15, 2013 “Goodbye World” would make its world premiere at the L.A. Film Festival. With his mother on hand along with the rest of the cast, Cudi was noticeably ecstatic and there was good reason for it. Cudi would serve an important role in the film and it’s main plot while getting his first real chance to show off his acting chops.
The moment Kid Cudi announced he was releasing a rock album with Dot Da Genius the internet hate was at full throttle. WZRD is the alternative rock album that you would expect from someone as multi-talented as Cudi and I commend him for taking the challenge and creating the music he wanted to. Cudi and Dot Da Genius delivered something that no artists with Hip-Hop roots have really done before and it showed with stand out tracks like “Teleport 2 Me”, “Upper Room”, “High Off Life”.
